Marudheeran begin a journey to Vedhalapuram to rescue Pavazhamalli. Pavazhamalli is kidnapped by a group of Vedhalams and also Vembunathan. Marudheeran loves his child hood sweetheart Pavazhamalli (Shruti Haasan) and both decide to marry.
The villagers are tortured by a group of people from the neighbouring kingdom of Vedhalapuram called the Vedhalams, who have supernatural powers. Puli is the story of Marudheeran (Vijay) who is the adopted son of a tribal village chief Vembunathan (Prabhu).
